Why Every Pregnant Couple Needs a Birth Preparation Workshop (Not Just a Hospital Class)
Hi there, beautiful mamas and partners, if you're reading along too. This one is for both of you.
Let me start by saying something that might surprise you: hospital antenatal classes are wonderful. They really are (saying this as I [Ragini] have done one in the past). They cover what happens during labour, what the medical team will do, what to expect at each stage, and how to navigate the system. Every couple should attend them.
But here's the question I had(after doing a hospital class) and hear from almost every couple I work with: "We know what's supposed to happen — but what are we supposed to actually DO in the room?"
That gap between knowing the procedure and knowing how to use your body, breath, and support person is exactly why a practical birth preparation workshop exists. And if you're approaching your third trimester, I truly believe it could be one of the most valuable things you do before your baby arrives.
The Numbers Tell a Story — And It's Worth Hearing
Australia's birth landscape has shifted dramatically over the past two decades. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), the caesarean section rate has risen every single year since 2004 — from 29% to 41% in 2023. That means more than two in five Australian women are now birthing via caesarean.
At the same time, the rate of non-instrumental vaginal birth has dropped from 56% to just 48%. And labour inductions peaked at 36% in 2020 before settling to 33% in 2023 — still one in three births.
Now, I'm not here to tell anyone how they should birth. Every birth is valid. But what these numbers tell me — as someone who has supported hundreds of women through yoga practices — is that more women than ever are going into labour without practical tools for working with their body. And that's something we can change.
What Hospital Classes Do Beautifully
Hospital antenatal classes are essential. Let's give them the credit they deserve:
- They explain what happens at each stage of labour
- They walk you through hospital policies, procedures, and what to expect on the day
- They cover pain relief options, monitoring, and when intervention might be needed
- They introduce you to the maternity ward and your care team
- It may be a part of your private hospital booking or you can book through your hospital making them accessible to everyone
This is important knowledge. It helps you feel oriented and informed. But here's the thing — knowing what happens is not the same as knowing what to do.
The Gap Most Couples Don't Know About
Hospital classes are designed around the medical process. But what they rarely cover is:
- How to use your body — movement, positioning, and mobility that can help baby descend and ease sensation
- How to use your breath — specific yogic breathing techniques for different stages of labour (not just "take a deep breath")
- How your support person can actually help — counter-pressure, grounding cues, when to speak and when to stay quiet
- How to work through fear — practical mindset tools, not just reassurance
A birth preparation workshop covers you — your body, your breath, your partnership, and your confidence.
Why Partners Need This Too
One of the most powerful things I see in our workshops is the moment a support person goes from "I don't know what to do" to "I've got this."
So many partners walk into the birth room feeling helpless. They want to support their person, but they've never been taught how. A hospital class might mention "be encouraging" — but what does that actually look like when contractions are intense and the room feels overwhelming?
In a birth preparation workshop, partners learn:
- How to breathe audibly so their partner can match their rhythm
- Grounding cues and phrases that genuinely help (not just "you're doing great")
- When to advocate with the care team and how to ask the right questions
- How to stay calm themselves — because your energy is her anchor
Partners always tell me afterwards that they finally feel like they know what to do. And mamas tell me they feel safer knowing their person has the tools.
How Our Yoga for Birth Workshop Fills the Gap
This is exactly why I created the Yoga for Birth Workshop — a full-day, hands-on intensive designed for pregnant women and their support person to attend together.
Here's what the day covers:
- How the body works in birth — and how to work with it, not against it
- Yoga postures and movement for labour sensations and baby positioning
- Yogic breathing techniques for different stages — early labour, active labour, transition
- Partner support techniques — touch, grounding cues you'll actually use
- Mindset tools to understand and move through birth fears
- Post-birth recovery basics for mum, partner, and baby
You don't need any yoga experience. You don't need to be flexible. You just need to show up with your person and a willingness to practise.
The workshop includes morning tea, printed take-home resources, pre-workshop online modules for both of you, and a 10% discount on our prenatal and postnatal yoga programs.

FAQs About Birth Preparation Workshops
Do I need yoga experience to attend?
Not at all. This workshop is designed for complete beginners. Everything is guided, gentle, and adapted to your body and stage of pregnancy.
What trimester should I attend?
We recommend 20–35 weeks — far enough along that birth feels real, but with enough time to practise what you learn. That said, any trimester is welcome.
Is this a replacement for hospital antenatal classes?
No — it's a complement. Hospital classes cover the medical process beautifully. This workshop covers the practical, physical, and emotional tools that hospital classes don't have time for. Together, they give you the most complete preparation possible.
Can I bring someone other than my partner?
Absolutely. Your support person can be your partner, a friend, your mum — anyone who will be with you on the day. What matters is that you practise together.
What if things don't go to plan during birth?
Birth rarely goes exactly to plan and that's okay. The skills you learn in this workshop — breath, presence, communication, calm, apply regardless of how birth unfolds. Whether you have a vaginal birth, an induction, or a caesarean, these tools help you feel more in control and more supported.
We'd love to see you and your person at the workshop. It might just be the most meaningful thing you do together before your baby arrives.
Always consult your healthcare provider or midwife before starting any new exercise during pregnancy or postnatally.
